LEGO FairlightCMI 11x

Our buddy Iain Heath, harkening back to his Disco Days, was inspired by grobie's ongoing series of classic synthesizers.  "Launched in 1979, the Fairlight CMI was the first commercially viable digital sampling keyboard. It ushered in a new decade of musical experimentation at the hands of artists like Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Mike Oldfield and the Art of Noise."  The only thing missing is a pic of Iain with some nice sideburns and a pair of bell bottoms--Funky!

LEGO Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0

I've always been a Porsche fan.  My dad had a 356 Cabrio when I was a little kid, but you guessed it, mom made him sell it and get something "safer."  Rats!  But that was a long time ago, and Porsche has come a long way, not only in its production cars, but in its racing division.  What's great about the brand, though, is that after all these years, Porsche design cues are still immediately recognizable.  Fast forward to 2016: Malte Dodowski is clearly a fan as well with this flawless 911 GT3 model. Check out his photostream for all the detail shots!

Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem

"It's time to play the music, It's time to light the lights, It's time to meet the Muppets on the Muppet Show tonight!"  Every successful TV variety show needs a great band, and Grubaluk has masterfully recreated this one from the Muppet Show.  Dr. Teeth, Zoot, Floyd Pepper, Janice, and of course, Animal (pronounced An-i-mal!)

2222

I've had my eye on this series of builds for several weeks now, but Cole Blaq has finally posted a group shot of his 2222 team.  The context for these is "the close cyberfunk'd future."  He's got the Aliens 2 inspired MPV, the drop ship, the mech, plus the infantry.  All very effective at near-future crowd control and intimidation.  I don't know, Cole, better not give them too many good ideas.  Check out the whole set here

Where The Wild Things Are!

Wild indeed!  Luke Watkins Hutchinson has been a busy guy.  In fact, he's announced a project with Bricks magazine where he'll be demonstrating, month by month, how he builds these amazing scenes.  That's why he's only posted the one pic, you'll have to get a subscription to see the rest.

Both Bricks and Brick Culture are high quality publications, and for those of us in North America, not particularly expensive, even with the postage.  Definitely worth checking out!

Gordon Parks Arts Hall

My good friend and fellow VLUGer Dave Kaleta recently completed an architectural piece commissioned by the University of Chicago to celebrate their new Gordon Parks Art Hall.  Turns out the George Lucas Family Foundation was a main contributor to this vast facility.  The director of the University Laboratory Schools then recruited Dave, who's also an alum, to build this model as a gift to George Lucas and his wife Mellody Hobson.  Yeah, you read that right.  Congrats, Dave!

It's The Thought That Counts

The Emperor is clearly not amused.  My guess he thinks Vader just gave him an Ewok for Christmas.  And after that whole Endor fiasco...

Je hyung Lee has created this high quality SSD Bridge, complete with the perfect lighting and background star-scape.  I'm sure the crew down in the pit is braced for a few jolts of Force Lightening!

Merry Christmas, and May the Force Be With You!

Christmas Bookends

Deborah Higdon has built a pair of large scale bookends that when rearranged create a festive Christmas scene.  As you scroll through the album, you'll see that the gifts are from the 12 Days of Christmas.  All very clever and well built, with some humor thrown in for good measure.  Let's just say some items were damaged during shipping.  If you haven't heard the song a thousand times by now, you might want to check this version out.

Ewok Village

I have to be honest, I'm not a big Ewok fan.  Even as a kid watching the movie, I wondered when Kermit and Miss Piggy were going to show up.  But this Ewok Village by KW Vauban almost changes my mind.  The scale and detail are most impressive!  He's got the party up above, the funeral pyre down below, and the Ewok Battle Wagon double parked at the base, anticipating an emergency beer run, I suppose.

The whole display sits on four 48X48 baseplates, and stands 97cm tall.  That's like three feet-Dude!  Scroll through the post on MocPages to see all the action.

Motion Capture

Over the past year or so, Joe Perez, aka MortalSwordsman, has been building small scale animals to capture their natural movement and energy doing what they do best.  From chasing down a gazelle in Kenya, to snatching a salmon from an Alaskan river, each one of these shots is right out of a nature film.

Speaking of films, I'd like to see Joe's version of a Tauntaun running through the snow!

MICROFLEET

I've kinda got this thing for rag-tag fleets, although this one isn't particularly rag-tag.  In fact ska2d2 has created a pretty cohesive style in spite of the variation in designs.  What I really like are the number of details he's packed into them, details you'd usually see in much larger ships.  I'm just waiting for him to build something with retracting flight pods

Root Canal

As a dentist, I see people cringe when I say those words.  But when I saw this creation by Lab Synth, I had a different reaction.  Drawing inspiration from Venice, the scene is comprised of a tight succession of palaces along a canal named for the tree in the small plaza.  The owners are extremely competitive, not only with architectural styles, but construction materials as well.  I recommend the zoom feature to see all the intricate details throughout the build.  It's almost like having the magnifiers dentists use when drilling on teeth.

Большой Космический Аппарат

I didn't even know I could read Russian.  When I saw this beast of a creation buy Timofey Tkachev, I said, "Dude! That's one huge spaceship!"  Turns out that's what the title means with a little help from Google Translate: Large Spacecraft

It's a fascinating design, with all sorts of complicated angles and components.  If you scroll through the photostream, you'll see some WIP shots that show parts of the internal structure.  I'm not sure if it's inspired by a movie, video game, or just Timofey's keen imagination, but whatever the language: Awesome!

Sisyphus Kinetic Sculpture

JK Brickworks has come up with a crafty LEGO version of everybody's favorite boulder pusher from Greek mythology.  Doomed to an eternity of rolling that huge rock up a hill, only to watch it tumble back to the bottom, Sisyphus probably shouldn't have tried to outsmart Zeus.  That never ends well.  Check out the video to see the cutaway and all the interesting technic bits inside.  You might just end up watching it over and over and over...

Viper: F78 Freya's Mercy

Mark Stafford has come up with a nifty Viper design, just as Nnovvember draws to a close.  What really caught my attention was the cockpit detail shot.  But the beefy guns and saucer wings create some dramatic visual interest as well.

There's still time, boys and girls, to build your own!  Pascal will be stitching together a poster of all the Vic Vipers, so follow his instructions if you want to be a part of it.  Unless you're still recovering from a Turkey Coma or Black Friday shopping...

LEGO Christmas Projects!

It's that time of year again, gang!  Time to dust off the old fruit cake and polish your Christmas balls.  But what do you take to all of those parties or gift exchanges?  Especially if you actually like the people you're going to see?  Well, our pal Chris McVeigh has an answer for that yearly dilemma-- Custom Christmas Ornaments!  From mini arcades to snow flakes, Chris has been creating these DIY projects for several years.

Another option is a Secret Santa gift exchange.  We've been doing this for a few years in VLUG (Virtual LEGO Users Group) on MocPages.  Larger in scale and more personalized than the ornaments, Secret Santa builds are a great excuse to get away from your usual style or interests.  I never thought I'd build a Filipino Parol out of Explorien pieces, but it seemed like a good idea when I drew Master Shifu's name out of the virtual hat. And I know he didn't see that coming!

It's also an opportunity to poke fun at your friends, like the gift I got from my buddy Hans Dendauw a couple of years ago.  You see, I'm a dentist, and I like to build Battlestar Galactica stuff.  Yeah, that's Hermey.  I laugh every time I look at it.  Thanks, Hans!

Okay, I know, giving away LEGO is one of those things.  It's difficult.  It took me a while.  But once you do it, and see the reaction that follows, it's a lot of fun.   Plus it means you don't have to go out and fight the crowds shopping!

Voltron: Defender of the Universe!

Okay, team:  Activate your interlocks, connect your dyna-therms, and up your infra-cells.  Never knew what that last one meant, but anyway... Let's go Voltron Force!  Check out this detailed and functional LEGO reproduction of a classic 80's cartoon robot by승훈 이.  He's got all the poses, too, not only for Voltron, but all of the individual Lions.  "Form Blazing Sword!"

Neo Classic Space Bridge

Isn't this awesome?!?  The lighting, the work stations, the chair; it's such a great combination of all the sci-fi sets we know and love.  Somehow you get a sense of the mass of the rest of the ship in this shot, and the crew's anticipation of what's about to happen.  Is it an alien ship, or a dangerous spacial anomaly?  Hopefully Peter Reid is working on a story line of NCS adventures.
