Red Lady of the Stream

Eero Okkenen has come up with another stunning figure making use of those nifty "orient-esque" pieces from the Final Flight of Destiny's Bounty Nijago set.  Now, as all of us anglers know, the red lady of the stream refers to the Grayling species of freshwater fish.  So creating a literal yet mythological interpretation is certainly an intriguing concept, and I'd argue worthy of an entire anime series.

Winter Fox Hunt

I watched a lot of nature shows when I was a kid, so when I saw this shot of Miro Dudas' new moc, I could almost hear David Attenborough's voice.  Built for a contest on Eurobricks, Miro has captured the action perfectly.  The fox, listening to it's prey scurrying beneath the snow, almost has a smile on its face, ready to strike.  Lunchtime!

Viper Mark II

As a BSG fan, this Mark II jumped right off the screen at me.  But when I read that it's actually over 100 studs long, I was struck: "No frakin' way!?!"  Chris Maddison has built a mega scale version of the iconic Colonial aerospace superiority fighter.  He's captured all of those sexy curves and angles which are a real challenge at the mini-fig scale.  And there's still plenty of room for tasty greebles on the side of the fuselage and around the engines.  Okay, Chris, time to go shoot some toasters!!

Avalonian Countryside

There's a lot to appreciate in this micro landscape by Full Plate.  It's pretty much a reference photo for the genre, covering just about every type of temperate-zone environment.   You've got your cattail marshland, complete with dock and rowboat, rich fall foliage, pine forest, and an open meadow.  I particularly like the rock wall detail and gate along the path to the houses.  It all blends together nicely for a serene backdrop to a story you can read here.

UCS Sith Fury-Class Interceptor

Markus19840420 recently discovered The Old Republic theme, and created this Ultimate Collector's Series ship for the German Star Wars Moc-Olympics contest.  You may recall there was an official minifig scale ship a few years back.  What I like about this is that it looks like a mash-up between a TIE Fighter and a Star Destroyer.  So my question to Markus would be, what noise do you make when you swoosh it?

Rogue One: Secret Room Scene

Ha!  I beat Tommy to a Star Wars post!!!  Gotta appreciate Markus19840420's attention to detail and cinematography in this shot.  At first I figured it was just another one of those post-some-minifigs-over-the-still-shot deals, but oh no, that's all LEGO.  The scene was built for a contest called IDSMO IV, which is a German Star Wars Moc Olympics.  But it's more than a nifty build, it's the mastery of the two art forms of LEGO and photography.  Well done, Markus!

Ushakov's Flying Submarine

Yeah, the Soviets really built one of these!   Ciamosław Ciamek has created a model of this obscure and fascinating piece of engineering history.  Designed by Boris Ushakov in the 1930s, then tested in the 1940s, the project unfortunately never seemed to "take off,"  and was cancelled in 1953.  However, with today's technology, it's possible that someone may revisit the concept.  That would be wicked!

Ard Ri

That's Gaelic for High King.  Dan Harris has created an ornate game board based on a Scottish variant of an ancient genre of strategy games called Tafl .  These games, originating in the Germanic and Celtic regions of northern Europe are played with two armies of uneven numbers.  The goal is for the King to escape from the center of the board to the periphery or, as in this case, a corner.  According to Dan, the King wins about half of the time.  What I really like about this set-up are the intricate patterns created with those sideways cheese-slopes, from the Viking ships on the outside to the dragon/ouroboros in the center.  Nice work, Dan!

JMC Starbug

Red Dwarf fans will get a charge out of this build!  And for the rest of us, we'll be seeing something pretty unique.  It's been a five year project by Patrick Gregory.  To me it's more of a sculpture than the typical sci-fi model.  But it's got a fully loaded interior, complete with all the characters I don't recognize.  That's what being a true fan is all about!  I know, I'm a BSG fan.  Awesome build here, Dude!

VirtuaLUG Putt Putt

For Brickworld 2016, VLUG opted to scale things back a bit from previous years, and focus more on individual creativity.  What better way to accomplish that goal than to build our own Mini-Land Plus Putt-Putt golf course!  Fearless leader Dave Kaleta took the helm again.  But unlike the Wizard of Oz collaboration which required very specific scenes and exacting standards, this year's concept left a lot up to the individual builders.   As long as you had your tee box and a path, you were good to go.  So from Cthulhu to Gamma Trianguli VI, the VLUG crew certainly didn't disappoint!

BattleSHIP! Brickworld 2016

You may have already seen pictures of the ships.  You may have actually been witness to the destruction.  But this will be the full story on the glorious and gut-wrenching concept that was BattleSHIP at Brickworld Chicago.  Simon Liu, the evil genius behind the idea, started a group just after SHIPtember, 2015.  "Hey, you guys interested in playing? Ask your buddies to see if they're crazy, I mean, interested, too. "  And so it began.

The Burrow

It's the Weasley family homestead!  From the Harry Potter series, if you're not already familiar.  Marcel V. presents his largest moc to date, and what a build it is.  Ingenious techniques abound in this display, and Marcel gives credit where credit is due.  If you happen to be at the Comic Con in Germany, you can see it in person.  And yes, Harry, it is brilliant!

Vaygr Carrier

If you think this ship by Tim Schwalfenberg is cool, just imagine a whole fleet!  You may recall his Corvette, Missile Frigate, and of course, the Vaygr Battlecruiser.  And if that isn't enough for you, imagine playing a game of Battleship with giant LEGO ships.  That's exactly what happened at this year's Brickworld!  But I'll get to all that in a future post.  So for now, admire the style and detail Tim put into this sci-fi creation.  That takes serious skill.  But tossing it up in the air to watch it smash into a million pieces?  That takes guts!

Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet

"How awesome is this?!?"  That's what I heard every time I walked by my pal Tyler Halliwell's display at Brickworld this weekend.  Among his impressive collection of busts was this new pair of builds from the Marvel Universe.  Seeing old Thanos in person was a real treat, too, once you got over the shock of how lifelike it is.  Amazing creation, Dude!

Porco Rosso

1930's Italy was a time of ruthless sky pirates menacing wealthy seafarers on the Adriatic, and the only thing that stood between them and their hapless victims was Porco Rosso:  The Red Pig!  Looks like our old pal Pate-keetongu was inspired by the 1992 Japanese movie based on a three part watercolor manga featuring a WWI flying ace who was transformed into an anthropomorphic pig.  Disney did an English dub as well.   The LEGO version of this unique character really captures his heroic nature and the dapper style of the era.  And hey, if a raccoon can fly a spaceship, I don't see why a pig can't fly a seaplane...

ThunderCats Good vs. Evil

Anyone who was a kid in the 80's instantly recognizes these guys, the characters and their symbols.  But builder Chris van Vliet qualifies the title by saying," NO NOT CHIMA!"  ThunderCats was part of that era of Japanese animation paired with American voice acting.  Although I was already in high school, I'll admit it, I watched the show while chomping on Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal.  Chris has done a great job recreating the logos and the 3D profile busts of Lion-O and Mumm-Ra on four 32x32 baseplates.  I'd say they'd be perfect book ends for a ThunderCats VHS collectors box set- ThunderCats Ho!!!
