Rolling in Style. . .In SPAAACE!

There seems to be a sudden wave of many amazing micro and nano scale creations in the past few months.  This miniature (yet mighty) space rover is a wonderful addition!  Builder Sad Brick has created a rover that is so unique, but incredibly realistic at the same time.  I would definitely cruise around in a full size version of this adorable little build!

My name is Nathaniel Stoner, and I am an very active LEGO builder.  I mostly build in the themes of castle and science-fiction, but I also dabble in other genres and create occasional random MOC's (My Own Creations).

When I was younger, I would get and build small LEGO sets for my birthday, but I was never really into them.  When they fell apart, I would become frustrated attempting to put them back together and would throw them in a box in my closet.  I couldn't stand them!

Then, miraculously, I became addicted to the LEGO brick later in my teen years.  Ever since, I have continued to build up (pun intended) my collection of bricks and to expand my knowledge of techniques and building skills.  LEGO is truly more than a toy, its an art form and a way to express yourself.

For the most part, I collect LEGO Star Wars (mainly the minifigs), which is probably my favorite LEGO theme.  I have a fairly decent collection, including some of the original 1999 sets, such as the Snowspeeder, X-Wing, and Naboo starfighter.  I also collected LEGO the Lord of the Rings when those sets first came out.  The minifigs are great, and the story remains one of my favorites ever.

Bricks in Costumes!

BOO!

Chris Maddison has been doing some, as he calls it, "Brick or Treating" this October.  It appears that some of his LEGO bricks have gotten all dressed up for the occasion!  Maybe they stopped at Party City?  My favorite costume represented here is the vampire on the right, though I do admit that I wish it had a bigger collar.  A very unique build, Chris!  Happy Halloween to you!

This Spaceship is Swooping in!

Every year during SHIPtember the SHIP's seem to get even more complex.  The same can be said for the smallest of spaceships, including this one by castle builder Andrew JN.  The wings on this creation give it a very organic feel to the design, almost similar to a bat.  Andrew used several different techniques to give his starfighter many great curves, which is really what drew me to the build.  I really enjoy seeing the creativity when it comes to building spaceships grow to new heights!

This Build is Not a Nightmare!

Builder Cesbrick has created a very fun Halloween build this season - a scene from The Nightmare Before Christmas!  The builder has used many intriguing techniques to give this creation great texture and detailing.  Every aspect of this creation is executed so well, with the slight curvature in the road, to that outstanding cobblestone!  I recognized the piece he used to do that stonework right away - Thor's hammer!  How crazy cool is that?  I do believe this technique is worthy.  All together, the colors in this build fit perfectly with the atmosphere throughout the movie.  A happy Halloween to you, Cesbrick!

Into the Future. . .and Beyond!

Cesbrick has long been one of my favorite builders.  Typically, he builds in the medieval / fantasy theme, but today he has something completely new and different:  a SHIP!  Personally, this is my favorite model I have seen for SHIPtember 2016.  The color choices used in this model are perfect, and what's even better is the fact that there is a perfect balance between them.  The subtle amounts of light gray mixed into the white is very pleasing to the eyes.  Furthermore, there are excellent examples of greebling all over this creation, and finally those fancy rings that wrap around this futuristic vessel - super cool!  Already looking forward to next year's SHIPtember!

Jungle Jam

Brothers Isaac and John Snyder are working on another project focused on the old Adventurers LEGO theme.  "John and I decided to do a collab series based around re-imagining old set themes. Adventurers is a theme we’ve liked for years, though we never had any of the sets."  This particular module by Isaac S. is a wonderful representation of ancient ruins that have been swallowed by the ever-growing wilderness.  LEGO jungle creations have always intrigued me.  Perhaps it's because it allows for the builder to dump as much forestry as they want onto the terrain.  The more overgrown, the better!  As Isaac demonstrates here, you also can mix different colors together for the growth which can add more depth.  The beauty of this creation speaks for itself, but something else I admire is that it's just as heavily detailed on every side.  Check out the build, but don't get lost out there!  Bring a machete with you.

Eat Your Carrots!

Ever hear the myth that eating lots of carrots will improve your eyesight?  Or maybe your parents told you this in order to make sure you ate your vegetables?  Well, builder Milan Sekiz has heard the myth before, and he has put a unique twist on the concept!  Milan has this to say about his newest creation: "On a planet similar to ours, these guys worship carrots for obvious reasons. They use strange mechas to harvest carrots from obelisks after worship ritual."  I find this build very creative and amusing.  I love the little alien creatures, but my favorite part (and probably the main focus of the build) is that gorgeous mech.  The colors are perfect, and it's a very slick design.  Wonderful work!  Now go eat your vegetables, kids.

The Magical Wizarding Bank

"Well there's yer money, Harry!  Gringotts the wizard bank.  Ain't no safer place, not one.  Except perhaps Hogwarts."

My sister introduced me to the magical world created by JK Rowling.  I don't have many memories of reading any other book series, but I absolutely remember reading the Harry Potter books for the first time!  The series has been given a lot of love in the LEGO community this year, especially thanks to the Harry's Magical Journey project.  Fellow builder and friend Jared has created a beautiful replica of Gringotts, the famous bank in Diagon Alley.  Obviously, a main attraction of this build is the well-designed dragon.  Before I talk about that, let's take a minute to admire the building itself.  Jared created a very unique roof design for this building, and the way he built the walls is, quite literally, simply fantastic.  Moreover the columns in the front, a main point of interest for the building, are recreated so well.  Now let's talk about that dragon...man.  What a work of art as well!  I included Jared's second photo of the back of the dragon below, just so more details of this wonderful LEGO creature are revealed.  All in all, this is an amazing creation that I was fortunate enough to see for the "unveiling" at BrickFair Virginia.  Looking forward to seeing more Harry Potter creations from you in the future, Jared!

BrickFair Virginia (2016) Recap

Well, another year of BrickFair Virginia has come and gone.  Why must it always pass us by so quickly?!  Sad remarks aside, let's get into the joy that is BrickFair.

As usual, the creations displayed were phenomenal!  There's always something new to see at this convention, which is a fact that I always look forward to when I attend.  I personally always enjoy meeting the upcoming builders that attend this event for their first time equally to reconnecting with old friends and other great builders.

It's easy for us here at BrickNerd to praise such a great convention, but what do other attendees have to say?  I conducted two brief interviews with a first timer at the convention and another builder who has attended for multiple years:

This was your first time as an exhibitor at a LEGO convention and attending BrickFair VA.  What was your favorite part about the event that makes you want to attend again next year?

Dominic M.:  "My favorite part about BrickFair is just about everything! There's plenty to do like meet new people, buy cool things, and show everyone what you can do as a LEGO builder! If you're a big fan of LEGO and you like to see other creations, or you want to show off your own, BrickFair is the place to go!"

I know that you have attended BrickFair VA for multiple years now.  What is it about this event that brings you back every year?

Joseph Z.:  "It gives me an opportunity to meet people in my community.  I also like the chance to see some of my favorite builds in person, and see old friends, of course!"

My fellow BrickNerd contributor Kodiak and I were both fortunate to attend the event and together have pulled together some photos of the highlights that were on display.  These photos are not enough to truly give you the experience, but hopefully they are enough to inspire you all to attend!

Until next year, BrickFair!

Rebels Have the Cooler Bases

This is truly a clean and pristine build!  Paul Trach hasn't added too much color, there aren't too many vines, and there aren't too many details on the floor.  Perfect, this build has become!  The walls are my favorite part, personally, due to the angling and the style of construction.  Other details that make this build great are the floor paint, the little cranes, and especially the sleek hangar transport device.  I would love to be based out of this outpost rather than a formal Imperial station.  How about you?!

"Begin Landing Your Troops"

I must admit, I have watched the new Rogue One trailer too many times already.  One thing that I have noticed in the trailer, along with many other Star Wars fans, is the new Imperial tank (for lack of a better title).  It can be seen in a few, quick shots within the two trailers for the film so far.  Along with the tank, it appears to have a new form of Stormtrooper, and I can only assume he is similar to a TIE pilot, only for this new craft.  Kevin Wollert (having now completed his Harry Potter vignette series) has designed a well-crafted replica of this new vehicle introduced in the Star Wars universe.  The is a phenomenal recreation of the new iconic vehicle, and it's going to be tough to beat!  Well done, Kevin!

Well, It Began As You Might Expect. . .

"In a whole in the ground, there lived...a Hobbit."

Balbo, a very popular Lord of the Rings LEGO builder, has created the iconic "Red Book of Westmarch."  You may recognize this book as the keeper of both Frodo and Bilbo's writings, containing their stories and their adventures of Middle-earth.  Just seeing this build come through my Flikr stream made me want to pull out a copy of the Lord of the Rings and start watching the trilogy again.  I also really want to open up this book and read the text within (even though I've read both stories multiple times).  If Tolkien was still alive, I believe he would be very pleased with this recreation, along with many other great LOTR creations.  Keep it up, Balbo!

Sharp and Sharp!

This build can be described as sharp!  (See what I did there?  'Cause it's an armory. . .)

Besides the deadly weapons being created here, this build is very pleasing to my eyes.  The dark gray structure accented by the lighter stone truly stands out, hence why I refer to this creation as sharp.  Another interesting color choice that I notice is the dark orange bricks mixed in with the wooden structure at the top.  I've seen a lot of debate in the comments about this choice.  In my honest opinion, I really like the color choice because it's unique.  Perhaps if there was a little bit more showing, it would appear that it belongs in the structure a little bit more.  All in all, jsnyder002 has designed another great medieval building!  You can see this creation for yourself at BrickFair Virginia coming up in August!

Big Boga!

*Insert Varactyl call here*

Markus Rollbühler has just built a beautiful and colorful replica of Boga, the creature that Obi-Wan rides around on Utapau while searching for General Grievous in Revenge of the Sith.  The craftsmanship in this model speaks for itself, especially with that dynamic pose Boga has done for the picture!  Markus has used his chosen colors very well - you're immediately drawn to the head of the Varactyl, which is built so well.  However, the tail, legs, main body, and dark orange base are also worth noting.  When I was a kid I wanted a pet Boga, but now I just want this model for in a case in my room!  Well done, Markus.  Thanks for bringing this great creature to life with your skills.

Don't Tap the Glass, They Hate it When You Do That

Talk about a crazy (in a good way) build to see this afternoon!  Djorde has built one of my favorite funky builds that I've seen in quite some time.  I'm sure there are many fish-related jokes that one could make about this creation, especially with the recent release of Finding Dory, but I'm not going to dive too deep to think of some.  (Get it?)  Just keep swimming, Djorde!  Okay, I'll stop now.

Gryffindor Wins!

Wookiewarrior has created the most accurate (in shape, color, and size) golden Snitch I have ever seen in LEGO!  This is truly a masterpiece worthy of display, from a wizard of a builder.  I can't speak for the interior structure of this build, but I think it would be super cool if you could actually throw it around with friends.  I should also mention the awesome use of the wings from the recent Ant-Man Final Battle set, which are very realistic to the actual Snitch.  A very cool, unique, and magical build!

STOMP-BANG-THUD!

Prepare for battle!  Robbadopdop has designed four wickedly cool "Powersuits."  Each is unique, yet they all appear to belong together.  It's rare to see this kind of build that still incorporates the minifig helmets and visors as the actual heads.  The craftsmanship that went into each of these models is very impressive and shows dedication.  The techniques used are phenomenal, and I especially like all the different weapons/accessories.  Let's get ready to rumble!

Don't Make a Mess, Messerschmitt

I have a great respect for World War era LEGO builders.  Not only is it a unique theme, but it is (in my honest opinion) one of the hardest and most difficult to pull off well.  All vehicles during that time period had a very distinct look to their features.  Replicating the angles well, along with the overall shaping in order to be accurate, is almost a war all on its own.  My good friend and fellow LEGO enthusiast Matt K. is one of the builders who performs particularly well in this theme.  Normally, Matt recreates accurate model of tanks, occasionally building a different vehicle model such as a German U-boat and WC-52 jeep.  This time, he has branched out and built an aircraft, specifically a BF 109.  I personally have attempted to build this plane before, but have never gotten a completed MOC at this quality.  Every little detail is precisely executed which results in a very sleek model.  Job well done!  Safe flights ahead. . .

Troll In the Dungeon!

Vitreolum just thought you should know about that troll in your basement. . .  Okay, let's start with the most obvious example of NPU (Nice Parts Usage): the Plant Monster headpiece.  Vitreolum is truly a master at NPU, and this build is no exception from that point.  The use of the strange new element LEGO has produced is truly magnificent!  It gives little bits of texture to the forehead of this unique creature, almost as if it has some wrinkles from old age.  Other examples of NPU are the minifigure hair piece used as some shaggy chin hair, and the LEGO Chima metallic paw piece as a shoulder guard (I personally have some of those pieces and can never figure out what to do with them).  All in all, the armor this creature wears is entirely made up of NPU!  I could definitely see this guy in a fairy tale. . .
