Gronckle
/One of the best things about How To Train Your Dragon was the design diversity of the dragons themselves. This is one of my favorites, the gronckle. There's something about his bumblebee proportions and goofy demeanor that just appeals to me. This version by Stormbringer captures him perfectly.
Spock & Uhura
/Here at BrickNerd we like to look back from time to time, and to the future. These figures were at my very first convention, BrickCon 2009. It also happened to be Ochre Jelly's first convention, and we stuck up a friendship that continues to this day (despite the fact that he's 3/4 clinically insane). Spock and Uhura typify his building style, and are just as awesome today as they were the first time I laid eyes on them.
Angry Uni-Kitty
/Yay! Tomorrow The LEGO Movie comes out! I have no idea what context this is in, but angry Uni-Kitty is clearly not to be messed with. It's always so odd when you have a rush of exposure to characters before the movie comes out. I know that in just another day this image will mean so much more to me. This MOC by Lego Junkie is spectacular.
Gumi
/I remember when I took my first gig in Hollywood. It was literally IN Hollywood (that's actually kind of rare) and there was a pizza place around the corner that I ate at fairly often. Nearly every time I was there there was a girl with neon green hair in the corner having a slice and reading a script. I guess she went on to rock star manga status, who knew?
Three More Join The Party
/I've been watching the development of this series of MOCs with great interest. Since my original post back in October, Pate-keetongu has created three more Dwarves from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. I look forward to the day when the entire party is in a single shot, it will be epic.
I cannot Tell A Lie...You Are Gonna Die
/Being a patriot means a lot of things to a lot of people. Perhaps you never forget to put the flag out on July 4th. Maybe you remember to always remove your hat during the National Anthem. And maybe you're a robotic civil war badass with a gatling gun built by Carlmerriam.
Chaos Marine
/This MOC by nate_daly is actually a few months old, but these new pictures really show off how awesome it truly is. There's so much to love and detail everywhere on this figure. I think my favorite part use is the Technic bumper bricks on the shoulders, inspired.
Go Go Gadget MOC!
/When Inspector Gadget was reaching the peak of his popularity I'm afraid I was a bit old for cartoons (if that's really possible). What's funny is when I see him what pops into my head is Doug E Fresh. But now I want to flip the whole thing on it's head and when I hear Doug E Fresh I'll think of this outstanding MOC by Orion Pax. Check out his website for a full gallery.
Autumnales
/I know Bionicle and Hero Factory doesn't get much love on this blog, I have no excuse. But this series of figures and background story caught my eye. This is a fantasy middle age series called Hyde by Thirdeye88. I love the aesthetic of these, I really want to see some more creative photography of them, they tell a story.
WALL•E
/There have been quite a few renditions of WALL•E in LEGO, many by some of my favorite builders. I think it's a testament to the excellent design and endearing qualities of a perfectly designed Pixar character. This version by Legonardo Davidy is pretty amazing, especially the SNOT work on his chest. Factor in that it was done in eight hours and, well, that's just stunning.
It's Only Ugly On The Outside
/Matt Armstrong (monsterbrick) was one of the first AFOLs I met as I was discovering I wasn't alone in my adult obsession with plastic bricks. He opened my eyes (see what I did there?) to wondrous possibilities with our favorite toy and continues to delight us all with fanciful and offbeat MOCs like this one.
The Summoning
/I love to see builders break out of their normal genres. This wizard from traditionally castle guy floodllama is lovely. The character himself is great, but what really sells this MOC is the use of 1x2 trans plates to great effect, especially above the hand. I can't imagine how fragile that is, but it's amazing.
Ivy
/Soul Caliber was probably my favorite game on the Dreamcast (oh, how we miss you Dreamcast). Many many happy hours were spent pummeling opponents in that game. One of the stand out characters was Ivy, not only for her amazing segmented whip sword, but of course for her costume and her figure (yes, totally silly, and clearly designed by a man). But she could certainly deliver some punishment. This Iron Builder inspired rendition by Pepa Quin is instantly recognizable.
WALL-E and EVE
/WALL-E is one of my favorite Pixar movies. Not only does it have a charming story with lovable characters and laughs as well as tugs on the heart strings. But one of the things I love the most about it was it was different and risky. And while I can't say this MOC by Legohaulic is risky, it has everything else going for it that the movie does, it's awesome.
Falkor
/Inspired Hemispheres
/The creativity that a simple seed part inspires always amazes me. oLaF LM and 6kyubi6 have been squaring off in a challenge from BrickPirates. The part is the ball turret hemisphere and it's the catalyst of both these brilliant builds.
